At Vivid Dental, our team of professionals are dedicated to helping others with enhancing their natural smiles. This includes providing treatments to save adult teeth whenever possible. There are situations that may lead patients to consider treatments such as root canal therapy. Dr. Monti Harpalani and his team can evaluate patients to determine if this treatment is necessary, while also helping them understand what is done through this service.
Root canal therapy is often recommended for patients who are experiencing infection or disease in a natural tooth. This issue occurs within the dental pulp inside of the tooth. Within the enamel is a mass of tissues and nerves that make up the dental pulp. If infected or diseased, patients often experience extreme pain. There are two ways of relieving this discomfort: root canal therapy (sometimes called endodontic therapy) or extraction. Removal of a permanent tooth requires restorative solutions. Root canal therapy can save the natural tooth, therefore maintaining the health and wellness of the smile for many years.
Root canal therapy removes the dental pulp from within the tooth. By doing so, this eliminates the infection while maintaining the structure. This procedure is done right in our office by our experienced team. A small hole is drilled into the tooth while patients are numbed. and comfortable with a sedative to relax them, if necessary. Tiny instruments are used to remove the dental pulp and disinfect the area. The tooth is filled with a rubber material called gutta percha and then sealed with a composite resin filling. In many cases, patients may also benefit from the placement of a dental crown over the tooth. A dental crown is a porcelain “cap” that can be bonded over the tooth to offer an extra layer of protection from biting and chewing forces. This allows patients to maintain their smiles without interruption, even when problems arise requiring procedures such as root canal therapy.
