At Vivid Dental, extraction is always a “last resort.” We take pride in our conservative approach to dentistry, which emphasizes techniques, materials, and technologies that preserve as much natural and healthy tooth structure as is possible; however, there may come a time when you have gaps in your smile where teeth used to be. Today, patients who are missing teeth have many sophisticated options to transform their smiles with teeth that look and feel natural, and function seamlessly (no fake and unwieldy “false teeth” here!). During a consultation with you, Dr. Monti Harpalani looks forward to going over the cost and benefits of a dental bridge at his Houston TX office, as well as alternatives to the conventional bridge process.
A “basic” bridge involves creating a three-piece unit: the replacement tooth and two crowns. The crowns are used to reinforce the teeth on either side of the missing tooth. This fused unit is then placed on the “prepared” teeth on either side of the gap. By preparation, Dr. Harpalani slightly reduces the adjacent teeth. So, there is space for the crowns. The bridge is then bonded to the natural teeth. In this way, the gap is bridged.
Bridges are considered to be an affordable option for tooth replacement. They can be cared for in much the same way as natural teeth and with good care, they stay healthy for years.
Bridges may also be made with dental implants. Conventional bridges are supported by crowned teeth on either side of the replacement tooth; however, implant-retained bridges are supported by implants placed in the jawbone. Dental implants are designed to function like tooth roots. Bridgework is connected to implants in the jaw, for the ultimate in stability. Implant-retained bridges support strong bone may be cared for like natural teeth. They are also the type of restoration that most closely replicates the appearance, feel, and function of natural teeth, because they are designed like a tooth (with roots).
The sooner Dr. Harpalani replaces missing teeth, the better. You avoid the destructive process of bone loss, which alters your facial structure, and how you speak and chew food. Conventional bridges cost less than bridges made with implants. The placement of the dental implant is the costliest component of the process and is generally not covered by insurance.
