Many causes of tooth loss are avoidable. A Houston native, Dr. Monti Harpalani partners with patients for the long haul. Along with his team at Vivid Dental, he keeps your smile looking and feeling its vividly healthy best with routine exams and cleanings. However, we provide peace of mind should you or your family member encounter an accident or other trauma that cannot be controlled and results in the need for dental extraction at our Houston, TX office.
We at Vivid Dental identify risk factors you may have for gum disease and tooth decay, the primary sources of tooth loss. We will then work with you to manage those risks, and to resolve oral problems early when they can be treated successfully, quickly, and conservatively. Natural teeth cannot be saved in all situations, though.
For instance, one of the most common types of dental extractions involves removing impacted wisdom teeth. By the time these third molars erupt at the very back of your mouth (usually in a person’s teens or 20s), there is often insufficient room in the jaw to accommodate the emerging teeth. So, wisdom teeth tend to become fully or partially trapped in the jaw. As the impacted molars push up against gum tissue, patients may suffer from pain, pressure, swelling, and other persistent or debilitating symptoms. Without proper treatment, wisdom teeth can cause damage to surrounding, healthy teeth, as well as other complications.
Dr. Harpalani may also recommend that a tooth be removed when:
Often, Dr. Harpalani removes a tooth nonsurgically – with little more than localized anesthetic for enhanced comfort. He uses a “light-touch” and conservative techniques to preserve maximum natural structure and for the least invasive procedure possible. Should your tooth be “trapped” or impacted, a surgical approach may be recommended. This process, too, is relatively straightforward. Your mouth is numbed (like we do with a “standard” extraction), and nitrous oxide is administered for added comfort. This calming medication leaves your system quickly (no lingering drowsiness!). The trouble tooth is exposed and, using precision techniques, Dr. Harpalani lifts the tooth from its socket.
Well in advance of your treatment, he will discuss pre- and post-operative instructions. We will soon be on the road to restoring your mouth with a lovely bridge or implant in no time, as the risks of complications following extraction procedures are low with proper aftercare.
