The root canal procedure is a common oral surgery performed with Dr. Monti Harpalani of Vivid Dental Family and Cosmetic Dentistry. Our team often recommends this treatment as a way of saving the natural tooth from requiring permanent extraction. In most cases, it is vital to maintain the natural teeth whenever possible, making root canal therapy a necessary treatment for some of our patients who are experiencing large cavities, abscesses, or deep infections inside of the tooth.
What is the process of performing root canal therapy?
- Sedation. First, patients receive proper sedation and anesthetics to ensure their comfort during the procedure.
- Access. Second, the dentist needs to find an access point to the inner canals of the tooth. This often requires a hole to be made with specialized instruments.
- Removal of pulp. The dentist then removes the dental pulp within the tooth through this access point.
- Disinfection. Once the dental pulp tissues have been removed from the inside of the tooth, the dentist disinfects the inner canals. This ensures that there are no bacteria left behind that can result in another infection.
- Sealing. Then, the dentist seals off the tooth with materials such as gutta-percha and composite resin.
- Crowning. Because removing the dental pulp removes the tooth’s nerves and blood supply, it can become weak, brittle, and more susceptible to damage. To protect the tooth and strengthen it, Dr. Harpalani will fabricate and place a dental crown.
