People often feel apprehensive when they come into our office for root canal therapy. However, we teach our Houston patients about the root canal treatment process upon the first consultation to reassure any unease.
Anytime a tooth has decayed past the gum line to the root, that’s when a root canal might be needed. At this stage, the bacteria penetrating through the decayed tooth has begun irritating the nerves. You’ll notice at least one of these symptoms:
One concern that people have when seeking a root canal treatment is if it will cause pain or discomfort. We assure you that the root canal treatment process doesn’t have to hurt as much as you imagine it might. If you struggle with anxiety about your upcoming appointment, we do have either nitrous oxide or local anesthetics that are safe for use and will wear off by the time you’re ready to leave our office.
After the initial consultation and X-ray exam, Dr. Monti Harpalani will determine if you need just a standard filling or if your situation calls for advanced root canal treatment. In both cases, the process is similar. It usually involves cleaning out the contaminated pulp to eliminate the irritation caused by bacteria growth. Then, we will seal the hole.
Again, we assure you that the care you receive will be as comfortable and as painless as possible. In most cases, the area surrounding your tooth might feel a little sore for a few days. If you have issues after treatment, contact your dentist for help.
