Being told by your dentist that you have gum disease can be scary. Without any intervention or treatment, gum disease can cause the gums around your teeth to erode to the point that tooth loss becomes inevitable. In extreme cases, gum disease can encourage the spread of infection to other parts of the body, leading to severe consequences such as heart attacks and death.
Fortunately, there are a number of ways to treat gum disease. In fact, in many cases, patients can reverse gum disease on their own if they are willing to spend a little bit of time working on their dental hygiene. These are some of the most common things Dr. Harpalani recommends to treat gum disease.
Start by brushing your teeth for at least two minutes at a time. Spending less time on this chore can be easy, especially if you’re already feeling rushed. At the very least, spend this much time on your teeth at night. It helps to ensure that a lot of the dangerous acids that eat away at the gum line are removed. It’s typically not possible to see these acids, but many people assume that they are done brushing their teeth if they can no longer see food particles.
Floss and use an anti-bacterial mouthwash. Doing this at least once a day can really help to remove and kill germs that produce corrosive acids.
Schedule regular cleaning appointments. At least every six months, make an appointment with our office. Our technicians will be able to clean your teeth and gums to remove plaque and strengthen your gums. They will also be able to recommend additional treatments if necessary.
