It is common for patients young and old to visit the dentist with dental anxiety. The team of Vivid Dental is well-versed in assisting patients who have fears about dental visits. It may be as simple as discomfort with having someone in their personal space, or a more deep-seated fear with an unknown cause. Whatever the reason, our practice is equipped with sedation methods that provide relaxation and calmness for our patients for painless dental care.
Sedation dentistry allows dentists to relax a patient to the point they can have work done without fears holding them back. We offer two different sedative methods including nitrous oxide and oral conscious sedation.
Nitrous oxide, often referred to by patients as “laughing gas,” is a gas administered through the nose during treatment to relax an individual. It provides almost immediate calmness. Some patients feel giddy in the dental chair while others may feel sleepy and extremely relaxed. Patients are awake during their treatment and can follow directions and speak to the dentist as needed.
Another option, which is often chosen for patients with more severe anxieties, is oral conscious sedation. It requires a prescription medication that is taken before an appointment. Patients arrange transportation to and from their dental visit. They are awake and coherent throughout their appointment but relaxed. Later, patients rest while the medication wears off and then awaken with their treatment done – and in many cases, little recollection of the visit.
During a consultation appointment, patients speak to their dentist about which sedation method is most appropriate for their specific levels of anxieties and their budget.
